Planning a Wedding in Scotland

If you're planning a wedding in Scotland, I hope this short article helps. I've had the privilege of photographing all kinds and sizes of weddings. No two weddings are the same, and while there are some typical moments across each day, you can create a bespoke ceremony and celebration, especially in Scotland. Here are some considerations for planning your big day.

Are you getting married outside?

Outdoor ceremonies are very popular, which is unsurprising given Scotland's many beautiful locations and settings. Based in Loch Lomond, I am often outdoors for a beautiful lochside wedding. Many venues have outdoor spaces; sometimes, with structures to protect from the elements, they will also have a wet weather option.

I cover a lot of options for wedding venues in my guide of where to get married in Loch Lomond, but I can also advise on other locations in Scotland.

How to budget and save money on your Wedding

Few weddings have unlimited budgets. My article, save money on your Scottish Wedding, explores simple ways to reduce costs without spoiling the day's magic.

Are you planning a small wedding or elopement in Scotland?

Another article on my blog covers planning small Loch Lomond weddings, and is relevant for weddings throughout Scotland. Sometimes it's more special to get married, accompanied only by your nearest and dearest. I love the intimacy of photographing a small wedding and find that many couples choose Loch Lomond and other parts of Scotland to elope.

Choosing Wedding Suppliers in Scotland

Some incredible small wedding businesses in Scotland are run by people passionate about making weddings memorable and unique. It can be daunting choosing wedding suppliers. Do check their Google reviews, not just the number of stars but the words customers have used to describe them; this is incredibly illuminating.

Planning Wedding Timings

It is easy if you have a wedding planner or an experienced venue host to plan the timings of the wedding day. Many of my wedding photography clients ask me for advice, which I am happy to provide on timing. The time of year should influence ceremony time, as you will want to maximize the daylight window in autumn and winter.

The key consideration is ensuring you have enough time to enjoy the day and spend time with your guests (and each other!)

Scottish Wedding Rules and Traditions

I'll end with the advice not to worry about rules or traditions. There are many elements of a Scottish wedding you will want to consider, but you don't have to do any of them - except say (legally) 'I Do'!

There is no right or wrong; a Scottish wedding can and should be a unique and memorable day for you and the people you share it with.
