Master Camera Settings at a Loch Lomond Workshop

Photography isn’t just about snapping pictures; it’s about understanding the art and science behind every shot. Around a decade ago, I created a 2.5-hour training course for people asking for one. Ten years on, and I still run multiple classes each year. I have shaped the course to meet people’s needs, thanks to participant feedback.

My passion lies in helping people discover the joy of photography, demystifying their camera settings, and empowering them to move beyond auto mode to capture stunning results. Over the years, I’ve taught hundreds of people—from absolute beginners who’ve never used a DSLR or Mirrorless camera to those taking their first steps toward becoming professionals.

My workshops are built on years of experience and a love for photography and teaching. I know how intimidating cameras can feel when you’re starting, but I also see the excitement of mastering those settings and watching your photography transform. I aim to share this with my participants—confidence, creativity, and the skills to produce images they can be proud of.

Photography Workshops in Loch Lomond’s Stunning Scenery

What I love most about teaching photography is seeing the moment it clicks for someone—when they realise their camera is capable of much more than they ever imagined. Whether you struggle to understand aperture and shutter speed or want better results, I tailor every session to meet your needs. My workshops aren’t about overwhelming you with jargon; they’re about breaking things down into simple, actionable steps that make a real difference.

One of the things that makes Loch Lomond so unique as a learning environment is the sheer variety of subjects you can photograph. From tranquil lochside views to bustling woodlands alive with birdsong, there’s inspiration around every corner. During my workshops, I guide participants to locations where they can practise various techniques, all while enjoying some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenery.

The village of Balmaha, nestled on the banks of Loch Lomond, is the perfect place to learn photography. Its stunning scenery, combined with a variety of landscapes, offers endless opportunities to practise and improve. I know the best spots in Balmaha to challenge participants and inspire creativity, from lochside views to woodland trails. For a truly unique experience, I sometimes host private courses on Inchcailloch Island, a short ferry ride from Balmaha, where the scenery is even more magical.

Participants often tell me that the peaceful, picturesque surroundings of Loch Lomond help them focus and connect more deeply with their photography. There’s something about being immersed in such a serene environment that sparks creativity and makes the learning experience even more enjoyable.

Learn Camera Settings and Master Manual Mode

My workshops are designed to give you practical skills you can use immediately. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of your camera and how to use it effectively. We start with the basics: learning to focus and capture sharp images, understanding the exposure triangle, and using different camera modes. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to shoot confidently in manual mode, knowing how to balance aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to get the perfect shot.

I see a common struggle with focus—especially when shooting in challenging conditions like low light or fast-moving subjects. In my workshops, I teach participants how to use their camera’s autofocus system effectively and when and how to switch to manual focus for greater control. These skills are essential for creating sharp, professional-quality images.

We also explore creative techniques like long-exposure photography, which can transform a simple scene into something magical. From silky-smooth waterfalls to starry night skies, I’ll show you how to achieve these effects using your camera and a few key accessories.

Photography Techniques for Stunning Photos

Beyond technical skills, the course covers essential photography techniques, including how to frame your shots and compose images for different subjects. Whether you’re photographing landscapes, portraits, or action shots, the workshop will provide practical tips and approaches to improve your results.

Composition is an art in itself. During the workshop, we’ll discuss techniques like the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing, which can dramatically enhance your photos. I also encourage participants to think creatively and break the “rules” when it serves the image. Some of the most striking photographs come from experimenting with unconventional angles, perspectives, and compositions.

Lighting is another critical element we focus on. Whether it’s the soft, golden light of sunrise or the dramatic shadows of a cloudy day, understanding how to work with natural light is key to creating compelling images. I guide participants in recognising and using different types of light to add depth, texture, and emotion to their photographs.

Why Choose my Photography Training?

What sets my workshops apart is the personal approach. With small group sizes of no more than six participants, everyone gets plenty of one-to-one support. I make it a point to get to know each participant’s goals and tailor the session to help them achieve them. My private courses, available for individuals or small groups of up to two people, offer an even more focused learning experience, allowing us to dive deep into specific techniques or challenges.

I also bring a unique perspective as both a photographer and a storyteller. My background in journalism and marketing has taught me how to use images to convey powerful messages and evoke emotions. During the workshop, I share insights on how to tell stories through your photos—whether it’s capturing the beauty of a landscape or the personality of a subject.

Student Success Stories: What People Say About My Courses

Hearing from my past participants is the greatest testament to the value of these workshops. Ian Abbott said,

“I had such an enjoyable and informative morning with Paul strolling around beautiful Balmaha: being encouraged to consider more carefully what shots to take—where best to take them from—what settings to use (and why)—and almost immediately I was seeing better results. I also learned a great deal more about the various DSLR settings, which opened my eyes to just how much more my camera was capable of.”

David Pattison shared, “After many decades and cameras, I now understand how it actually works! The session was fun, informative, and Paul is a very patient instructor. If you want to improve your knowledge and skill, he is your man.”

Lesley Pickles wrote, “I learned so much during this course and can't wait to get out there and take great photos, using the manual settings on my camera to do so. Understanding this gives a far higher quality photograph, whilst giving me personal satisfaction that I've understood how to adjust the settings to take the best photograph of my subject matter. Paul himself is a great teacher, very personable and knowledgeable and with the group being kept to small numbers, you are getting 1:1 time with Paul as well as support from the other course attendees.”

Loch Lomond Photography Courses for All Levels

One of the things I love most about hosting these workshops is the diversity of participants. Some have never touched a DSLR, while others have been taking photos for years but struggle with advanced functions. The joy comes in helping each person overcome their frustrations and realise their potential.

At the end of every session, I ask participants one simple question: “Do you feel like you can take better photographs as a result of this course?” The resounding answer has always been yes.

For families, couples, or friends looking for a shared experience, I also offer customised group sessions. These are a fantastic way to spend time together while learning a new skill and creating lasting memories.

Capture Incredible Photos at Loch Lomond

Learning photography at Loch Lomond is as much about the experience as the skills. There’s something magical about practising your craft in such a beautiful setting. Whether it’s capturing the reflections on the loch, the vibrant greens of the surrounding forests, or the golden light of a Scottish sunset, every shot feels special.

For those attending a private course on Inchcailloch Island, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination. A short ferry ride from Balmaha takes you to a secluded spot with breathtaking views and endless opportunities to practise what you’ve learned.

The tranquillity of the island allows participants to fully immerse themselves in the learning process, away from the distractions of everyday life. It’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression—not just in the skills you gain, but in the memories you create.

Ongoing Support and Resources for Photography Enthusiasts

The learning doesn’t stop when the workshop ends. Participants receive a downloadable presentation with notes, tips, and examples to reinforce what they’ve learned. I also encourage attendees to stay in touch, sharing their progress and asking follow-up questions. Building a community of enthusiastic photographers is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do.

In addition, I offer advanced workshops for those who want to continue their journey. These sessions dive deeper into specialised areas like night photography, wildlife photography, and editing techniques. Whatever your goals, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
